News

The following e-mail went out to customers and prospects of the Arizona Republic on Feb. 20. It was accompanied with the subject line “Advertise at no charge in The Republic March 1.”

Remember the old days of free online if you bought print? Those days are gone. Now the Arizona Republic is so desperate that they’re not only printing ads for free, if you use CareerBuilder, but they’re also giving away 5-line ads. We’ll be watching to see if they can get to their goal of a 20-page employment section this Sunday.

This is reminiscent of the Arizona CardinalsHail Mary at that end of this year’s Super Bowl. Oh wait, they ruled that a fumble. Not sure how this move turns out differently – another newspaper dropping the ball.

Please, somebody, anybody read our paper!

What kind of company would advertise in a newspaper who can’t even spell correctly? “Deer Valued Partner”?! Who cares if they are free – they don’t give the customer any confidence in their capabilities with a mistake like that. I stopped reading after that opening and maybe that’s just one of the reasons they are desperate for readers!

Wow, it’s been years since I thought of advertising in print and then getting the web listing for free. My how times have changed.
