Throughout the recession many industries have posted record declines in job openings; however, the federal government is actually ramping up their hiring efforts.
According to USAJobs.gov, there are 40,990 job openings within the U.S. government nationwide. Many large cities are advertising a plethora of openings, including Washington D.C. which currently has 6,536 federal openings, San Antonio with 2,190 openings, Colorado Springs with 1,706 openings, and Charleston, SC with 998 openings.
A breakdown of occupations within those openings shows that office assistants are most in need, with a total of 15,000 openings nationwide. Management and program analysts come in second with 14,000 job openings, while administrative staff, budget analysts, and IT management specialists round out the top five.
The Air Force Personnel Center is the top federal agency that is hiring, with 39,000 openings posted. The Navy Field Offices comes in second with 10,900 positions. Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, and the Army Corps of Engineers have thousands of jobs available as well.
