The Society for Human Resource Management has announced that Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, will be the keynote speaker at the company’s 61st Annual Conference and Exposition.

Welch is expected to speak about his views on the economy, the global business crisis and the critical role human resources plays today. Tom Brokaw, SHRM’s originally-scheduled keynote speaker, was assigned by NBC to produce a special report from Afghanistan during the time of the conference.

Welch served as chairman and CEO of General Electric for 20 years. During his tenure, the company went from a market value of $14 billion to more than $410 billion, making it the most valuable and largest company in the world. In 2000, he was named CEO of the Century by Forbes.

Welch is currently the head of Jack Welch, LLC, where he serves as special partner with the private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and as a consultant to IAC. He also teaches a leadership course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s School of Management.

Welch is most-known by many as a vocal advocate for HR’s contribution to business. He currently co-writes a weekly syndicated column titled, “The Welch Way,” with his wife Suzy. The couple also co-authored the novels “Winning” and “Winning: The Answers,” while Welch himself wrote an autobiography titled, “Jack: Straight from the Gut.”

Welch received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Master of Science and PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois.

The conference will take place from June 28 to July 1 in New Orleans. Welch’s keynote speech will take place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. June 28.
