Monster is currently beta testing PowerSearch, a slightly revamped version of its standard job search engine that it claims will find more results from your search criteria.

PowerSearch, which looks the same as Monster’s standard search page, is only different in that it is able to find more results because it’s not limited to the words you enter, and will find relevant jobs by matching your search criteria and related words. This allows you to receive a wider range of search results that are more relevant.

If you’re searching for a position using job titles, PowerSearch will find jobs that are closely related. For instance, if you search for “QA,” PowerSearch will find jobs that have “QA” in the title, as well as jobs for test engineers, because the search engine recognizes that QA and test engineer are closely related. Or if you search for software engineer, PowerSearch also will include results for software developer. You also can search for more than one job at a time.

If you’re searching for a position using keywords, or your skills or the industry you want to work in, you will receive job results that include keywords and jobs that require related skills.

If you’re searching for a position based on location and radius, a list of locations will appear in a drop-down menu based on the city, state or zip code you enter. You can then select the location you’re looking for and use the radius control to expand or limit your range of location options. This feature doesn’t appear to be any different than it is on the standard Monster job search page.

In addition, PowerSearch allows you to focus your search even more by using additional search terms, such as a specific company or years of work experience required. If you only enter a company name, PowerSearch will find the available positions at that company.

This new twist on the traditional Monster search page could end up helping job seekers who want to have broader options or it could end up inundating them with results they didn’t ask for.

Power Resume Search is quick, easy and works well! It does the same type of search on Monster’s data base (latent semantic/context-based) that Ontrack Engenium does on our local resume data base!
