The Center for Economic and Policy Research recently released a study that compared the rates of small business employment throughout the world.

The results may surprise you, as the study found that the United States has the second-smallest small business sector in the world. The study found that America has a 7.2 percent self-employment rate, only ahead of Luxembourg, which has a 6.1 percent self-employment rate.

The countries that have the highest self-employment rate include Greece at 35.9 percent, Italy at 26.4 percent, Portugal at 24.2 percent, Spain at 17.7 percent and New Zealand at 17.3 percent. France, Denmark and Norway joined the U.S. and Luxembourg in the bottom five, with self-employment rates of 9 percent, 8.9 percent and 8 percent, respectively.

The study used data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development to measure the share of employment in small businesses in 22 rich democracies.
