Indeed recently released its Job Market Competition index, which compares the number of unemployed people to the number of job postings in the 50 biggest cities throughout the country.
The index is based on the fact that the more unemployed people there are per job opening, the more competition there is in that particular job market and the harder it is to find a job in that area.
The results found that Washington, D.C. has the least competition for jobs and is relatively better for the unemployed, with six job openings for every unemployed person. On the other side, Detroit has the worst competition for jobs, with 18 unemployed people for every job opening.
The top five job markets are:
- Washington, D.C.
- Jacksonville, Fla.
- Baltimore
- Salt Lake City
- New York City
The worst five markets are:
- Portland
- Los Angeles
- Riverside, Calif.
- Miami
- Detroit

not sure i agree with this… DC seemingly has the least competition for jobs with six job openings for every unemployed person but if you look at the demographics of the unemployed compared to the openings… they just aren’t competitive. i would argue DC is uber competitive given the kind of talent that comes to town. you have the best and brightest coming here to make a difference. besides NYC, i think it’s the place you come to when you are highly accomplished, highly focused, and highly driven. but this is all me speaking from anecdote. something for me to think about and maybe blog about… thanks.
