By Laurie Ruettimann - Hello from sunny and fabulous San Diego, where I'm spending three days with the best and brightest sourcing and recruiting professionals at ERE Expo. The networking portion of the conference is well underway, and attendees are smiling, brandishing business cards, and shaking hands with wild abandon. I don't have anything to talk about other than my cat, so I'm doing a tremendous amount of listening. What are people talking about?

By Laurie Ruettimann - Recruiters are some of the most competitive people I know, and every year — around January 2nd — I decline an invitation from a friend in the recruiting industry to join a weight-loss competition. It starts out as an email from the event organizer who bemoans the copious amounts of food & alcohol that have been consumed by Americans since Thanksgiving. Once it’s established that I am a lard-butt — like most Americans — I am invited to participate in a 90-day contest of healthy eating & exercise to help achieve my own personal weight-loss goals. I call shenanigans on the concept of group weight-loss at work. It's nice to be healthy and exercise, but you won't be successful in your life and in your career if you are starving your body and your mind.

By Laurie Ruettimann - I haven't always been a PunkRockHR blogger. At one point in my life, I was a career-oriented professional who believed in HR process, policy, and rules. Then one day, back in 2002, I was approached by sales representative from AIRS. I held the dual position of Global Staffing Manager and HR Manager for a widely respected insurance company in Chicago, and when the sales representative asked me to lunch, it confirmed what I foolishly believed about myself: I was talented, important, and very punk rock. You want to go to lunch with me? Of course you do. Everyone wants a piece of me.
