new survey forecasts severe job cuts for ‘08

January 28th, 2008

More bad news for the employment sector.
Career Protection, a provider of employment negotiations advice, has recently conducted a study of over 1,375 corporate executives nationwide, and the findings aren’t positive. They predict a 37 percent increase in companies planning layoffs and reductions in workforce this year.
Says Career Protection president and CEO Kirk Nemer:
This is our […]

permalinks: another reason to hate vertical search

January 15th, 2008

Consider the typical Google experience: Type in query, click search, see results, click and go directly to site. Pretty cut-and-dry. And, for the most part, everyone’s happy.
Now, imagine if - in addition to the process above - Google actually took a portion of your on-page content, say 1,000 characters or so, and made their own […]

google’s ‘web history’ is a ticking time bomb for seo

January 11th, 2008

If you have an account on Google, you’ve probably noticed a link entitled “Web History.” Maybe you’re already using it. Signing-up provides the following benefits, per Google:

Why the layoffs?
Ellis said the site is […]

People much smarter than me are talking recession in 2008, which means everything from a modest tightening of the belt to going out […]

a recap of 2007 predictions

December 27th, 2007

I made some predictions for 2007. Let’s see how I did.
1. MySpace wins. Facebook loses.
Man, how much crow can one man eat? The gang at MySpace would disagree, but there’s no doubt this was the Year of Facebook. Just ask MySpace owner Rupert Murdoch. Most impressively, FB has everyone - including Google - on their […]

edgeio sells for meager $280,000

December 21st, 2007

Like many in the online classifieds space, I watched the recent auction of Edgeio with great curiosity. The bidding ended today with Looksmart acquiring “most” of the assets for only $280,000. There were just two serious bidders in the process.
I’m not sure this is a good sign for others in the same category. If a […]
