By Vanessa Dennis - Back in February, CareerBuilder quietly launched BrightFuse, a business network that is being marketed as a forum for the masses. Richard Castellini, VP of Consumer Marketing for CareerBuilder, said, "We looked at social networking...and we saw that it's something that's not going away, and that CareerBuilder should be involved with and understand it, so we launched BrightFuse. What's always been the number one way for people to recruit is referrals, which is essentially networking, and it makes sense for us to provide our job seekers with a platform for which they can develop themselves from a professional standpoint."

By Jenny Floren - With the presidential race and all of the discussion that goes with it, I can’t stop thinking about the debate between experience and confidence. If a candidate has relevant work experience, but hasn’t developed the “soft” skills to back it up, does that make him/her a more viable candidate? Or what if someone has the confidence to succeed, but doesn’t have the industry experience to back it up – do you trust your gut? Experience vs. Confidence: When evaluating two candidates, which gets more weight?

By Susan Burns - The use of video for recruitment is nothing new. It may not be widely used yet but its nothing new – in 1999 while at Macy’s Inc. we launched our first college recruitment site with 20+ executive video interviews. Even the use of video for candidate interviews is not really new – several years ago video-conference style interviewing was trying to emerge. It never happened, due to many of the same questions that remain today around the use of video resumes.

By Vanessa Dennis - Just one look at Progessive Insurance's career site and there's the immediate impression that this recruiting team gets it. The site offers glimpses into specific careers via short videos, a talent network for applicants, and a selection of career paths so new grads can explore their potential. Their entire application process, from hello to handshake, is published front and center so that applicants remain educated on the evolution of their application. I spoke with Progessive's Brand Director of Employment and Marketing and their Manager of Executive Recruiting to talk about their recent push for brand consistency, their internal Facebook recruiting team, and what job board they've recently partnered with to supplement their ATS.

By Joel Cheesman - CATS, an applicant tracking solution, hit the market in 2006. Although throwing its hat into an already-crowded ring, the company cut through the clutter with an open source model that was free and gave users the ability to take the code and tweak it how they wished. Since then, the company has gone to a traditional offering similar to those seen in services provided by organizations like Taleo and Kenexa. So how is the company going to stay competitive and grow with such stiff competition? We chatted up the gang at CATS to find out. Interestingly, the company is moving into new areas such as providing job boards to destination sites like blogs.

By Vanessa Dennis - Given the recent financial crisis that will most certainly impact us all, I thought it would be appropriate to get different perspectives from some well-known industry leaders in the recruiting space. Some viewpoints are couched in optimism, while others give a more cynical and foreboding outlook. Martin Snyder of PCRecruiter said of the crisis, "America is now the place to fail upward. If you are a CEO that runs a company into the ground, no worries since you are about to get a better job. Generally speaking, if you sit on your ass for a living, you are probably overpaid. We have created an ugly two-class system that will lead to our undoing for real if we don't bring the extremes back toward the middle, and I say that from the fortunate side of the fence, for the time being."

By Vanessa Dennis - Advorto blogger Susanna Cesar-Morton recently offered up some social networking options for HR reps and recruiters in the UK who have complained that RecruitingBlogs.com, created by Jason Davis, is mainly focused on U.S.-based content. Morton said, "Social networking guru Peter Gold created Talent Cloud on Ning and is actively growing the network . . . Peter has put a lot of thought into growing the network, and it is one of the best options." While TC's numbers don't quite compare to RBC rapidly nearing their goal of 20K members, Gold said he that he takes an opposite approach to limiting memberships and aims to keep the network 'uncluttered.' I spoke with Gold about why he thinks network owners play a part in the destruction of their own site, his vision for Talent Cloud, and how apathy could become his biggest competitor.
