By Job Gal | July 14, 2008
Alabama is a state located in the southern United States, and is the 23rd most populous state in the country. Alabama is bordered by Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. Montgomery serves as the state capital.
The name Alabama comes from a Muskogean tribe. The French founded the first European settlement at Mobile in 1702. Alabama was admitted as a state in 1819, and the area became known for its cotton and other farming production. In 1861 Alabama joined the Confederacy, and was readmitted to the Union in 1868.
Today Alabama is second to Detroit in automobile manufacturing. The state is home to the NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S. Army Missile Command. The state also is home to many banking centers and construction and engineering companies.
