    Alaska

Alaska is an American state located in the northwest portion of North America. It is the largest state by area and the sixth wealthiest state in the nation. Juneau serves as the state capital.

    Vitus Bering
was the first European to find Alaska in 1741. The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million. The land became an organized territory in 1912 and the 49th state in 1959. The name Alaska was part of the Russian language and means “the mainland.”

In the 1890s the Yukon Territory was home to many gold rushes, and the state played a vital role during World War II. In 1964 the Good Friday Earthquake killed 131 people. In 1968, oil was discovered at Prudhoe Bay and the Trans-Alaska pipeline was completed in 1977. Alaska is one of only five states with no state sales tax or individual income tax, although some municipalities collect a local sales tax.
