The City of Atlanta is the capital and most populous city in Georgia, and is the center of the ninth most populous metropolitan area in the country. Atlanta is ranked as the 34th largest city in the United States and the sixth-largest southeastern city. Between 2000 and 2006, Atlanta grew 20.5 percent, making it the fastest growing metropolitan area in the nation.
Atlanta began to develop in the early 1800s following the building of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. J. Edgar Thomson, Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad, suggested the area be called Atlantica-Pacifica. The city officially became known as Atlanta in 1847. During the Civil War, the city served as an important military and supply hub, and also played an important role during World War II and the Civil Rights Movement.
Atlanta’s progressive attitude, growing economy and population made it a popular destination after 1970. In 1990 Atlanta was selected as the site for the 1996 Summer Olympics, and the city undertook many major construction projects to improve the city’s parks, sports facilities and transportation. Atlanta is home to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Coca Cola and Turner Broadcasting.
