    California

California is a state on the west coast of the United States located along the Pacific Ocean. It is the most populous state in the country and the third-largest state by land area. The name is believed to come from a story of an Amazon paradise ruled by Queen Califia. Sacramento serves as the state capital.

In 1542, Joao Rodrigues Cabrilho was the first European to explore California, followed by English explorer Francis Drake in 1579. In 1846, California became independent from Mexico, and following the Mexican-American War, Mexico turned California over to the United States.

In 1848, California became the center of the California Gold Rush, causing a boom in population. Today California ranks among the 10 largest economies in the world. California is home to many significant economic regions, including Hollywood, Southern California, the California Central Valley, Silicon Valley, Tech Coast and many wine producing regions.
