Chicago, located in northeast Illinois, is the largest city in the state and Midwest, and the third-most populous city in the country. Adjacent to Lake Michigan, it is also the largest city on the Great Lakes, and is among the world’s 25 largest urban areas by population. Chicago is considered to be an alpha world city.
Haitian Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, the first permanent settler, arrived in the 1770s. Chicago was founded in 1833 and incorporated as a city in 1837. The city suffered the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which destroyed a third of the city, including the entire central business district. Since the Chicago World Fair in 1893, it has been regarded as one of the world’s 10 most influential cities.
Chicago had a hand in developing economics, architecture and physics, as Chicago Pile-1 served as the world’s first artificial nuclear reactor. Today Chicago is known for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Magnificent Mile shopping area and the theater district. In 2006, Chicago was named the 10th richest city by UBS.
Chicago’s Job Market
In 2007, Chicago had a gross metropolitan product of $442 billion, the third-largest in the country. Chicago also has the second-largest central business district in the nation.
The city’s fastest growing industries include: healthcare, information technology, urban planning, and education.
