Columbus, Ohio
Columbus is the largest city in the State of Ohio and has served as the state capital since 1816. The city, named after Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus, was founded in 1812 at the conference of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers. The city is located near the center of Ohio, and is about a two-hour drive to any destination in the state.
Money Magazine called Columbus the eighth best large city to inhabit, and Columbus also is recognized as a growing global city. As of 2006, Columbus was the 15th largest city, the 32nd largest metropolitan area, and the third most populous capital behind Indianapolis, Indiana and Phoenix, Arizona.
The National Road, which reached Columbus from Baltimore in 1831 and complemented the city’s link to the Ohio and Erie Canal, brought a population boom to the city. During the Civil War, Columbus was home to Camp Chase, a major Union Army volunteer base that housed 26,000 troops and about 9,000 Confederate prisoners of war.
