Dallas, located in Northeast Texas, is the third-largest city in the state and the ninth-largest city in the country. It is the economic center of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, which includes 12 counties and is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the nation.
Dallas was founded in 1841 by John N. Bryan and incorporated as a city in 1856. The city is named after Vice President George Mifflin Dallas. The city has a long history as a center for the oil and cotton industries.
Dallas is home to 15 billionaires, who live in the Preston Hollow area north of the city, making it ninth in the world among cities with the most billionaires. The city also is currently the third most popular destination for business travel.
Dallas’s Job Market
Dallas is listed as a gamma world city by the Loughborough University Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network. By 1900, Dallas was the largest inland cotton market on Earth, and in the 1930s, oil was discovered east of the city. At the end of World War II Dallas had developed prominent telecommunications and information technology industries.
