    Denver, Colorado

Denver is the capital and most populous city in the State of Colorado. Denver is a consolidated city-county and is located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains, east of the Front Range of the Southern Rocky Mountains. The city is nicknamed the Mile-High City because it sits exactly 1 mile above sea level.

Denver was founded as a mining town in 1858 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory. The spot was later named Denver in honor of Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver, and was incorporated as a city in 1861 and became capital in 1876. In the late 1800s the city saw a rise in corruption and organized crime. In 1887, the precursor to the United Way was formed in Denver by religious leaders working to raise funds to help the city’s poor.

Denver was selected to host the 1976 Winter Olympics, but because voters turned down using public funding, the games were moved to Innsbruck, Austria. This makes Denver the only city to refuse an Olympic bid. Today Denver is known as playing an important role in the agricultural industry.

    Denver’s Job Market
Much of Denver’s economy is based on the city’s geographic location and connection to major transportation systems in the country. Because of this Denver has become a natural location for storage and distribution of goods to the mountain states. The city also has a large government industry, and is home to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The city’s fastest-growing industries include: education and health services, leisure and hospitality, other services and government.
