Detroit is the largest city in the State of Michigan, and is a major port city on the Detroit River. It is located in the Midwest United States, and is the only major city in the country that looks south to Canada, as it is located north of Windsor, Ontario. In 2006, Detroit ranked as the nation’s 11th most populous city.
Detroit was founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The city’s name comes from the Detroit River, meaning “strait of Lake Erie,” as it links Lake Huron and Lake Erie. Detroit fell to British troops in the War of 1812, but was regained by the United States in 1813 and incorporated as a city in 1815. In 1980, Detroit hosted the Republican National Convention.
In the 1990s, Detroit began to undergo a revival. Today the city is known as a world automotive center, and hosts three casinos: MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Greektown Casino. The city also is known for its music scene, and is often referred to as Motown.
