    SpringfieldIllinois

Illinois is located in the Midwestern region of the United States. Springfield serves as the state capital, while Chicago is the largest city. Illinois is bordered by Wisconsin to the north, Iowa and Missouri to the west, Tennessee to the south and Kentucky and Indiana to the east.

The word Illinois comes from the French adaptation of the Algonquin word meaning “she/he speaks normally,” or from the Illiniwek people who once inhabited the area. French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet were the first to explore the area in 1673. Chicago became the biggest city in 1857 because of the Great Lakes and rail hub. The growth of mines and factories in the 19th Century helped form many labor unions in the state. Illinois was home to the Pullman Strike, Haymarket Riot and Great Chicago Fire. The stat also played an important part in the American Revolution and Civil War. Illinois was admitted as the 21st state into the Union.

Following World War II, Argonne National Laboratory activated the first experimental nuclear power generating system in the country. Today the state is known for its energy industry, which includes coal, petroleum, nuclear power, wind power and biofuels.
