Miami, a city in southeastern Florida, is located within the most populous county in the state. It is the largest city in the Miami Metropolitan area, which is the fourth-largest urban area in the country.
The city was founded by Julia Tuttle, a local citrus grower and wealthy Cleveland native. Miami is the only major city in the United States found by a woman. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1896.
The city’s Port of Miami accommodates the largest volume of cruise ships in the world, and Miami also has the largest concentration of international banks in the country. In 2008, Miami was ranked as America’s cleanest city by Forbes Magazine, and as the third-richest city in the country and the 22nd richest city in the world by UBS.
Miami is home to the National Hurricane Center and the headquarters of the United States Southern Command.

Miami is a major center of commerce, finances, corporate headquarters and international business. Tourism also is one of the city’s most important industries, drawing more than 12 million visitors per year.
