    Mississippi

Mississippi is a state located in the deep south of the United States. Jackson serves as the state capital and is the largest city. The state is made up of mostly forestland outside of the Mississippi Delta area. The state was named after the Mississippi River, which comes from the Ojibwe language, meaning “great river.”

Hernando de Soto led the first major European expedition into Mississippi in 1540. The state was deeded to the British under the Treaty of Paris in 1763, and became part of America following the American Revolution. Mississippi was admitted as the 20th state into the Union in 1817. During the mid-1800s the state was known for its cotton production and slavery. Mississippi was the second state to secede from the Union as one of the Confederate States of America in 1861, and later passed Jim Crow laws. The state also played a large role in the Civil Rights Movement.

Today Mississippi is known for having a lively music scene and producing many authors, playwrights and historians. The state’s catfish aquaculture farms produce the majority of farm-raised catfish in the country.
