Nebraska
Nebraska is located in the Great Plains region of the Midwestern United States. Lincoln serves as the state capital, while Omaha is the largest city. Nebraska is bordered by South Dakota to the north, Wyoming and Colorado to the west, Kansas to the south and Missouri and Iowa to the east.
The word Nebraska comes from the Otoe word meaning “flat water” after the Platte River, which flows through the state. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 created the Nebraska Territory. Homesteaders began flocking to the territory in 1860 after the federal government granted free land. Nebraska became the 37th state in 1867, shortly after the Civil War.
Arbor Day was founded in Nebraska and the National Arbor Day Foundation is headquartered in the state. The state has a long history of civil rights activism, which began in 1912 with the foundation of Omaha’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
