    New Jersey

New Jersey is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States. It is bordered by New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania and the Atlantic Ocean. The state’s name comes from Jersey, the largest English Channel Island, and Trenton serves as the state capital.

The state was granted to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley of Stratton. New Jersey was an important site during the American Revolutionary War, and several battles were fought there. In 1921, New Jersey was home to the first Miss America Pageant, the first drive-in movie was shown in 1933 in Camden and in 1927 the Holland Tunnel opened.

New Jersey has a unique location, and some of its boundaries lie within the metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia, which has helped increased the state’s population. The state is sometimes referred to as the center of the BosWash megalopolis, between Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
