New Orleans, Louisiana
Originally named after Philippe II Duc d’Orleans, who was the Regent of France, New Orleans is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Located in Southeastern Louisiana, the city surrounds the Mississippi River, making it an important port city.
In recent history, New Orleans has experienced a large drop in its economic activity when compared to newer cities in the south such as Houston and Atlanta. Despite the fact that the port remains extremely important, automation and containerization have caused it to provide fewer jobs. Over time, New Orleans has become more dependent on tourism as its largest industry.
The city is still known as a central for its multicultural and multilingual past. Famous for its food, architecture, being the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans is also the home to Mardi Gras, which is one of the country’s largest celebrations/festivals.
