    New York

New York is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States. The country’s third-most populous state, it is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Canada.

The state was named after James Stuart, the 17th Century Duke of York. The region was first claimed by Henry Hudson in 1609. About one-third of all the American Revolutionary War battles took place in New York, and the state gained independence in 1776.

Albany serves as the state capital. New York City, located within the state, is the largest city in the nation, and is known for its history as a gateway for immigrants, and as a financial, cultural, transportation and manufacturing center. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, New York is the choice for foreign visitors, topping both Florida and California.
