    Oregon

Oregon is located in the Pacific Northwest Region of the United States. The state is located on the Pacific coast, and is bordered by Washington to the north, California to the south, Nevada to the southeast and Idaho to the east. Salem serves as the state capital, while Portland is the most populous city. The Columbia and Snake rivers define Oregon’s northern and eastern boundaries.

It is unknown where the name Oregon came from, but some believe French explorers called the Columbia River “Hurricane River”, or “le fleuve aux ouragans.” James Cook explored the coast of Oregon in 1778, followed by Lewis and Clark from 1805 to 1806 and David Thompson in 1811. Also in 1811, John Jacob Astor, a New Yorker, financed the establishment of Fort Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. The British gained control of Oregon during the War of 1812. The Oregon Trail brought new settlers to the area from 1842 to 1843. Oregon became a state and was admitted into the Union in 1859.

During the Civil War many Oregonian troops were sent east. Industrial expansion began with the construction of the Booneville Dam from 1933 to 1937. Following that, hydroelectric power, food and lumber provided by Oregon helped develop the west. The state has a long history of idealistic conflicts amongst its residents, and many people have secessionist ideas.

The state also has a large salmon-fishing industry and many small breweries. Oregon also is known for its high-technology industry.
