By Job Gal | July 2, 2008
Orlando, located in central Florida in Orange County, is the state’s third-largest metropolitan area. The city was named around 1837 after Orlando Reeves, a sugar mill and plantation operator, who allegedly died in a war against the Seminole Indian tribe.
Orlando was previously known as Jernigan, after cattleman Aaron Jernigan, the first permanent settler. In the 1800s, Orlando became the center of Florida’s citrus industry. Today, the city is in close proximity to Patrick Air Force Base and Kennedy Space Center, and is home to the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division.
Orlando is known for its tourist attractions, and sees about 52 million tourists per year. The city has the second-largest number of hotel rooms in the country and is one of the busiest cities for conferences and conventions. In 2007, Orlando was ranked as the fifth-most wired city by Forbes, and as the fifth-best performing city by the Milken Institute.
