Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh is the second-largest city in the State of Pennsylvania. The city was built in a triangular shape, surrounded by the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, where the Ohio River forms. Pittsburgh has 151 high-rise buildings, 446 bridges, two inclined railways and a pre-revolutionary fortification.
Pittsburgh was named in 1758 by General John Forbes in honor of British Statesman Sir William Pitt. The area was first discovered in 1669 by Sieur de La Salle during his expedition down the Ohio River from Lake Ontario and Quebec. Pittsburgh played a major part in the French and Indian War, and under the 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix, the descendants of William Penn purchased most of what is now Pittsburgh from the Six Nations. The area thrived after the American Revolution, because of boat building, and during the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion. The War of 1812 led the city to produce significant amounts of iron, brass, tin and glass products. Pittsburgh officially became a city in 1816. The American Civil War and World War II led the city to produce massive amounts of steel, causing mass pollution.
Pittsburgh is ranked 25th in the country for jobs within the urban core. The city was originally known for its steel industry, but is known today for healthcare, education, technology, robotics, fashion and financial services. Pittsburgh was named the 10th cleanest city by Forbes in 2007, the 13th best city for young professionals to live by Forbes in 2008 and America’s most livable city by Places Rated Almanac in 2007.
Pittsburgh’s Job Market

Pittsburgh’s fastest-growing industries include: healthcare, education, research and tourism.
