San Diego, California
San Diego received it’s name in 1602 from Spanish map maker Sebastian Vizcaino, who named the area after Saint Didacus (commonly known to Spaniards as San Diego). The area became incorporated as a city in 1850 after the end of the Mexican-American War and the gold rush of 1848.
The U.S. Navy has maintained a large presence in the area since 1907. Aside from government work, the area is also a huge center for biotechnology and telecommunications.
Today, San Diego is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest in the
nation. The U.S. Census Bureau statistics show that the city is the ninth-most educated city in America and Forbes Magazine has said that San Diego is the fifth wealthiest city in the U.S.
