    San Francisco, California

The City of San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California, and 14th most populous city in the country. The city is located at the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the west, San Francisco Bay to the east and the Golden Gate to the north.

In 1776, the Spanish settled near present day San Francisco, which is named for Francis of Assisi. The city’s population boomed in 1848 during the California Gold Rush, and was devastated by an earthquake and fire in 1906. The Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and Fort Mason played important roles during World War II. The UN Charter, forming the United Nations, was drafted and signed in San Francisco in 1945.

The dot-com boom of the late 1990s brought many startup companies to the area, and high technology and entrepreneurship continue to play an important role in the city’s economy. Today San Francisco is a popular tourist destination and is known for its diverse culture and various landmarks.
