    Located in the western pan handle area of Florida, the City of Tallahassee is approximately 20 miles from both the State of Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico.

    Named for the Seminole word for “old fields,” Tallahassee became the capital of the State of Florida in 1824. Prior to World War II, the city was a small town and most of the residents lived within a mile of the capitol.

    Today Tallahassee is considered a regional center for both trade and agriculture. The growth of the city has been greatly aided by government jobs and research positions associated with Florida State University and Florida A&M University.
