    Texas

Texas is a state located in the south central United States, also known as the Lone Star State. The state is the second largest in the nation in both area and population. Austin serves as the state capital, while Houston is the largest city and the Dallas/Fort Worth area is the largest metropolitan area.

Texas was claimed by Spain, and it was part of Mexico until 1836. It joined the United States in 1845 as the 28th state. The state has a long history as being the center of the American cattle industry, and the discovery of oil in the early 1900s led to a large economic boom. The state’s annexation helped lead to the Mexican-American War and the U.S. Civil War.

    Texas’s Job Market
In 2006, Texas had a gross state product of $1.09 trillion, the second highest in the country. Texas’s growth is mostly due to the availability of jobs, low cost of housing, lack of personal state income tax, high quality of education, low taxation and limited regulation of business, a central geographic location, limited government, favorable weather and abundant natural resources.

The fastest growing industries are: agriculture, mining, energy, technology and commerce
