    Vermont

Vermont is a state located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is the only New England state with no coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, and is known for its green mountains and proximity to Lake Champlain. Montpelier serves as the state capital. Vermont is bordered by Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east, New York to the west and Quebec, Canada to the north.

Jacques Cartier is thought to be the first European to discover Vermont in 1535. However, in 1609 French explorer Samuel de Champlain claimed the state as part of New France. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris gave Vermont to the British. In 1777 Vermont was granted independence, and it became a state in 1791.

Vermont played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, during which time the state sent more than 34,000 men into battle. Following the Civil War, the state began to grow economically, and became a ground for women’s rights and anti-slavery movements. Today Vermont is the leading producer of maple syrup in the country.
