    Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, was founded on July 16, 1790. The city was created as part of the Residence Act, which established the district as the new permanent capital. George Washington chose the location of the capital, and it was named in his honor in 1791.

The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River, and is bordered by Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the northwest, northeast and southeast. An 1871 Act of Congress merged the city and district into a single entity. The United States Congress has supreme authority over Washington D.C., so residents have less self-governance.

The city’s population increases to more than 1 million people during the workweek because of commuters. D.C. is home to 172 foreign embassies, headquarters of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organization of American States and the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as several trade unions, lobbying groups and professional associations.
