By Joel Cheesman - The ERE Expo went down last week. Judging by the turnout, you probably weren’t there. That’s not to say the show was a failure; it just means it was a bit more intimate than the past few events. A brief discussion with ERE head David Manaster brought a positive outlook when he reminded me that attendance at the most recent show was about the same as it was a few years ago with about the same overhead. They’ll no doubt survive the economic storm. Which might be saying more than most companies in our industry these days. Rumors of death, destruction and downturn were abundant.

By Joel Cheesman - Times are undeniably bad at a majority of job boards and vendors. Many were hoping just getting through January - typically one of the best months for revenue - would bring temporary relief. Those who could afford high-priced Super Bowl ads and Monstrous redesigns, were probably hoping to fare even better. It’s not looking that way. March is shaping up to be a particularly nasty month for the industry (insert mandatory “Ides of March” cliche here). Many sources are telling us to buckle-up. As one job board owner recently put it, “We continue to hold our own, but we do hear daily about companies struggling. This seems to have hit staffing / recruiting companies especially hard. I don’t remember it being this bad after 9/11.”
