By Vanessa Dennis - Spock co-founder and VP of Marketing Jay Bhatti gives five tips people can use to optimize their online footprint.

Jay Bhatti, co-founder and VP of development at search engine Spock.com, has five tips job seekers can use to maintain an edge over competitors and use the Web to their advantage:

Know What’s Publicly Available – Execunet.com conducted a survey of 100 executive recruiters, noting that 77 percent used sites such as Spock to learn more about a person and 35 percent of those had eliminated a candidate based on information uncovered. You should therefore get in the habit of regularly performing a Spock and Google search for your name and e-mail. Any information you see will represent what any good recruiter or hiring manager will look for before or after an interview. In this case it’s best to use a people specific search service, which will look deeper and is more likely to display information about you. Always remember to search for yourself by additional keywords such as location or university.

Along with checking your own online footprint, make sure to research some of your potential employers. Employee reviews sites such as JobVent and Criticat will save you time and help you avoid any scams or poor work environments.

Cast a Wide Net – Be aggressive in your search and post your resume in as many locations as possible. While sites such as Monster and Careerbuilder are great for advice and general search, you may be better off posting on smaller and more specific resume site such as SalesGravy or Dice.

Promote Yourself– While restricting access to embarrassing or inappropriate information is advisable, displaying your interests and hobbies on the Web is a great way for potential employers to get to know you better. Author Ellen Sautter notes, “Having an online identity is becoming increasingly important as a way to establish your credibility and personal brand and to attract career or business opportunities…” In today’s workplace, fitting in with a company culture and philosophy can be just as important as your qualifications. Therefore consider placing yourself on several different types of places on the Web. Keep in mind that you should remain consistent and professional on any site you join.

Optimize – Search engines are universally adopting the Google method of indexing unique and relevant content first. You should be optimizing your resume, blog or homepage in a similar fashion by being descriptive and creative with your keywords. This will ultimately help you optimize for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). For any blogs add unique tags to a post so that you’ll get noticed by other readers. You’ll also want to comment on other people’s posts, which in turn should create links back to you. If you have a homepage, try to add keywords to the text title (the top bar across your browser).

Network - There’s a wealth of knowledge on the Internet so use it to your advantage. In addition to making your web presence felt, you should be networking with other people in your industry. Using professional sites such as Linkedin and Spock to connect, you should start taking part in forums, and checking out the latest trends. Jack Hinson in discussing how networking helped land him a job, told Margot Lester of Monster.com, “I’d spoken to the company’s founders about a year ago and stayed in touch…then I ran into one of them at a networking function”.

“Our companies share a conviction that world-class customer experience is delivered by talented and passionate teams.
Category #1: What is Twitter? None of this makes sense.

Category #2: How do I get started using Twitter?

Category #3: Isn’t Twitter a big waste of time?

The conference never addressed any of these points. So I created the following video and slide deck to answer those issues.

In this video I delineate three ways to help fill your positions using Twitter without posting messages. I also discuss three additional ways seasoned recruiters leverage Twitter to help recruiting through posting techniques.

American Mensa, a high IQ society open to anyone who scores in the top two percent on an accepted, standardized test, has launched American Mensa CareerLink.

The reason for the career site, a spokeperson said, was because recent studies have indicated that many job hunters falsely indicate they are a true member of Mensa. By accessing the site, employers can guarantee that their prospects are, in fact, Mensa members.

In order to access contact information on a resume they find on the site, employers must pay a fee of $20. They also post jobs, which cost $150 for members and $200 for nonmembers.

“American Mensa’s CareerLink will provide our members with a unique opportunity to connect with employers and look at posted jobs in their industry,” said Heather Miller Poirier, Membership Officer of American Mensa. “This service will expose our membership to new jobs that are ideal to their chosen career path, and employers to job candidates who have tested in the top two percent of intelligence in the United States.”

Currently there are around 50,000 Mensa members in the U.S.

JobTarget is providing the career services on the site.

MyPerfectGig.com is a new job site that utilizes a skill cloud interface in order to navigate job seekers to their ideal job in a few clicks.

The site’s algorithm updates skill associations based on user input, enabling its knowledge base to grow organically and provide better matches, a spokesperson said.

“Our intelligent, guided-search interface reboots the recruiting world by enabling job seekers to discover available jobs via a common language with employers,” said Blair Heavey, CEO. “Those not actively seeking jobs can also discover the value of their specific skill within their market and more strategically plan their careers.”

The site does not require user registration or resume submittal. Upon locating a position from the skill cloud interface, the candidate can request to be introduced to an employer. The employer only then may request the candidate’s resume, after the candidate has identified their ideal job and requested the introduction.

I had fun playing around on the site, which is geared towards engineers, and whittling down the job search results by selecting skills from the cloud. I can’t say that I’ve come across such a unique user interface before, and I think job seekers will enjoy the simplicity and ease-of-use that goes along with the candidate experience.

By Vanessa Dennis - Johnson and Perkinson, a law firm based in Vermont, have filed a class action lawsuit naming Taleo Corporation and officers and directors of Taleo.

Johnson and Perkinson, a law firm based in Vermont, have filed a class action lawsuit naming Taleo Corporation, a provider of talent management software, and officers and directors of Taleo.

According to MarketWatch, individuals, families, trusts or other entities that invested in Taleo securities between October 4, 2005 and November 10, 2008, inclusive (the “Class Period”), have the opportunity to participate as Lead Plaintiffs in the currently pending class action litigation against the Company. To do so, you must apply to serve in that capacity by January 16, 2009.

The Complaint alleges that defendants misled or failed to inform the investing public regarding the Company’s historical and current accounting practices with respect to the timing for recognition of application and consulting revenues under generally accepted accounting principles in the United States (”GAAP”).

These policies, which reflected an inappropriate application of GAAP designed to accelerate the recognition of revenues, had been part of a scheme to defraud investors since the Company’s initial public offering in October 2005. As a result of this acceleration of revenues, Taleo was able to present to investors a rosier picture of its financial condition than the appropriate revenue figures would have depicted.

Illinois, whose 6.9 percent unemployment rate is above the national average of 6.1, is partnering with CareerBuilder to launch Illinois WorkNet, a state-run web site that will connect citizens to job openings.

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevish issued this state regarding the new site:

I know that Illinoisans are suffering. We see evidence of that everyday as families make difficult decisions about budgeting their money, how to get by while they look for a new job, or how to ensure that their children have opportunities in this tough economy. While our state cannot fix the mistakes made by those on Wall Street and in Washington, we do offer services to help families through a difficult time. During Illinois Workforce Week, I want to make sure that Illinoisans know that they can get help through services like Illinois workNet, All Kids, and LIHEAP.

Employment officials working with the state aim to link job seekers with openings in the state’s four highest-growth industries: health care, information technology, manufacturing and transportation, distribution and logistics.

As of Monday afternoon, the CareerBuilder site listed at least 15,000 job openings.

By Vanessa Dennis - RealMatch has announced that they are now powering 1200+ job channels with more collaborations in the pipeline.

RealMatch, a job site that utilizes their own taxonomy of titles and skills instead of keywords to match employers and job seekers, is now powering over 1200 job channels, VP of Business Development Rafael Cosentino said.

The announcement comes after RealMatch and Fisher Communications, a communications company that owns 13 full power television stations and 8 radio stations, created an alliance to bring RealMatch technology to Fisher’s web sites, including http://www.komonews.com/marketplace.

“As Realmatch grows, we have been replacing the platforms of classified/keyword/pay-to-post job platforms provided by sites like Careerbuilder, Hotjobs, Monster, Jobtarget, Adicio and others,” Cosentino said.

He added that RealMatch has also gone live with Scientific American, a publication that specializes in news and features on science issues. Both Scientific American and Fisher Communications are two examples of many companies that RealMatch partnered with in the last two weeks with dozens more expected.

Cosentino said, “It’s important to note that as employers and recruiters abandon old technology and risky pricing models, Web publishers are forced to update their offering to reflect their customers preferences and this is why we are having so much luck getting distribution.”
