“who the hell wants to listen to me?”

September 28th, 2007 -- by Rick Myers

Well, after some prodding and thinking I have finally agreed to blog. Joel was kind enough to ask, and I decided what the hell. So here I am on Cheezhead.

If you’re going to read my first blog post, there is something you should know, besides the fact that my post will likely suck.

Every time a random request comes in to have me speak, join a panel, lecture, be interviewed, write, blog, I always wonder, “Who the hell wants to listen to me?”

Most people have a page, a blog, a podcast, a social network, and a broadband channel on the way. Everyone is spewing, few are listening, and nothing is said. I’d rather be part of the solution. Sure, I have plenty of thoughts, but you know the saying about opinions and I’d rather not add to all the online garbage that seems to be accumulating. If I’m going to open up my big mouth, I’d rather say something constructive.

This is where you, Time Magazine’s Person-of-the-Year, comes in.

My IT guys label me an early-adapter, but truth is I’m old fashioned. Yeah, I have RSS feeds and more iPods than I need, but I still subscribe to newspapers and I still enjoy long-playing albums. So I’d like to treat my first on-line blog posting experience like a good old call-in radio show. You know, the familiar terrestrial kind.

Just call in, tell me what you want to talk about and we’ll discuss it. Suddenly I feel like Kramer, “Why don’t you just tell me the name of the movie you’d like to see?”

Use the comment option below like you would a phone line, and even better than a phone-in, no one will screen the callers. Score another point for the new iMedium.

I’ll do my best to produce a decent post about the topics you’d like to discuss. Conversely, I’ll steer clear from topics foreign to me, which includes many.

Enough said. I’ll just leave you with this and call it a post. The world is changing and I’m excited about the possibilities. I don’t know where we are going, but I’m hopeful it will a fun ride. Pow!

Bravo! Best post on this site so far. No offense to the other writers. I feel the same way except in my case the only people that bother to comment on my posts are competitors that are spidering the site, most likely not reading my posts and providing a link to their sites because the heading says “Background Checks”. In the spirit of operating your entries as a radio show, I say “first time caller and I look forward to being a long time listener”.

    Hello Rick,

I read your blog as I subscribe to Cheezhead. Forgive my ignorance, (and I could google you and try and search you out,) but who are you? The web is a big place and I live in New Zealand so I am sorry but your reputation hasn’t reached me here, in the South Pacific.

I realise that if the Big Cheese has been prodding you to blog you must have done something interesting. Could you do a little introduction in your next blog please?

    Thanks

Please discuss Jobster. I don’t think they’ve been covered enough.

OK, I’ll bite. I would love to get your opinion on the current lack of integration between job boards and employer ATSes, which causes jobseekers to manually re-enter their profiles for each employer and each job board they submit to. Many job board and employers are aware that this issue causes significant drop-off rates. Is it worthwhile for job boards to pay for tighter integration for application submission?

Disclosure: I work for Career Liaison, which offers software to interconnect job boards and employer ATSes.
